Composite Decking for UK Gardens: England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland Guide

by Solid Wall Panels UK 16 Aug 2026 0 comments

Composite decking has to cope with more than sunny afternoons, it sits outside through everything the UK throws at it: rain, frost, damp winters, and the odd heatwave. This guide covers the colour options in our WPC decking boards range, what actually matters when installing decking depending on where in the UK you're based, and delivery across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Real boards from our Composite Decking collection throughout.

Why Composite Over Timber?

WPC (wood plastic composite) decking is built from a blend of wood fibres and plastic, giving it the look of timber decking without timber's usual maintenance. It doesn't rot, splinter, or need annual staining or sealing, an occasional wash with water is enough. The boards are also slip resistant, worth knowing if your garden gets shaded or exposed to regular rain, which describes most of the UK for a good chunk of the year.

Colour Options

Grey is the most neutral option and pairs easily with most patio and garden styles. Dark Brown and Khaki read closer to natural timber tones. Black gives a sharper, more contemporary finish, popular for modern garden rooms and minimal outdoor spaces.

What Matters by Region

UK weather isn't the same everywhere, and decking sits directly exposed to it year-round, unlike furniture you can bring indoors. Here's what to think about depending on where you are.

England: conditions vary, but most of England, especially the South East and Midlands, is comparatively mild and dry. Standard installation with correct board spacing for drainage is normally all that's needed. Coastal England still benefits from composite's resistance to salt air compared to untreated timber.

Wales: higher rainfall than most of England, particularly the west and around Snowdonia, makes drainage underneath the deck more important. Make sure boards are laid over a properly spaced joist frame so water can run off rather than pool underneath.

Scotland: the wettest and coldest of the four nations on average, especially the west coast and Highlands. Composite decking holds up well here since it doesn't crack under freeze-thaw cycles the way some timber treatments can, and the slip-resistant surface matters more when boards are regularly wet or frosted.

Northern Ireland: similar to Wales and west Scotland, Northern Ireland's Atlantic-influenced climate brings frequent rainfall, so the same drainage and joist-spacing advice applies. Composite decking's low maintenance also counts for more here, since a timber deck exposed to that much rain typically needs re-treating more often to stay in good condition.

Installing for Proper Drainage

  • Lay boards over a joist frame with a small gap between boards (following the manufacturer spacing for your board width) so rainwater drains through rather than sitting on the surface.
  • Leave ventilation space underneath the deck structure itself, not just between boards, to stop moisture building up beneath the frame.
  • Use our Composite Decking Clips & Fixings for a hidden, screw-free fit that keeps consistent board spacing across the whole deck.

Delivery Across England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland

We deliver to all four nations. Delivery cost and timeframes can vary by postcode, decking boards are bulky items, so this matters more here than with smaller products, particularly for Northern Ireland and more remote parts of Scotland and Wales. Enter your postcode at checkout to see the exact delivery cost and estimated timeframe for your address before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does composite decking work in wetter parts of the UK like Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland?
Yes, composite decking is designed to handle regular rain without rotting or warping. Proper drainage underneath the boards during installation matters more in these areas than the board material itself.

Is composite decking slippery when wet?
Our boards have a slip-resistant surface, though as with any outdoor surface, normal care is still sensible in icy or heavily wet conditions.

Do you deliver decking boards to Northern Ireland?
Yes. Delivery cost and timeframe are shown at checkout once you enter your postcode.
